Houstonians might complain about rent, but none have it worse than San Francisco residents, where the median rate is $3,270 per month.
That’s according to residential rental research site Zumper, which just released its first-quarter findings for 2017. At No. 2 in the priciest cities to rent is New York City followed by Boston, San Jose and Washington D.C., respectively.

Houston came in at No. 23, with a median rent of $1,210 for a one-bedroom and $1,500 for a two-bedroom home.
Around this same time last year, rates were just 15 percent lower. Over-development, especially of luxury residential complexes, have made rents rise at a slower pace. Some building are now even offering rebates, move-in specials and other incentives, including upscale amenities and features to lure in tenants.

A lot of that crowding is in central Houston, desirable areas like Montrose and the Galleria area. The Energy Corridor, too, is seeing a dampening pace of rent hikes as an after-effect of the oil industry downturn.
Still, some of the rates in town remain steep. Houston’s most expensive neighborhood to lease a home is the Museum District, followed by Downtown Houston, Hunter Creek Village, and Montrose/Fourth Ward.
“Houston has continued to be a highly desirable city to live in, with the boom in the tech world/attractive wages, so the demand for housing there has grown substantially,” Zumper spokesperson Crystal Chen said.
